globalisation free trade and firefighters
UFUQ involved in USQ Research Project
The Research Project
Defining the human security understanding and expectations of the United Firefighters’ Union - Queensland in the face of Australia’s burgeoning Asian free trade ambitions.
What is it for?
The project examines the relationship between the concept of Human Security, the Australian free-trade agreement with China, globalisation, and UFUQ membership in a quest to find a suitable definition for the term ‘human security’, as it applies to firefighters.
Why is this project relevant to the UFUQ?
The 21st Century has brought Australian workers rapid change. These forces of change must be understood before the effects can be interpreted properly. Simply reacting to change is ineffectual and results in losing out in the long run. The public sector is under threat throughout the Western world as the forces of ‘globalisation’ compel governments of all political persuasions to reduce taxes, privatise the public sector, and run ‘small government’ policies to attack workers’ rights, wages, and conditions. The ‘social wage’, services like public health, public education, pensions and social security are slashed and the gap between the rich and the poor widens. These are all issues of ‘human security’. They involve the members of the UFUQ and their families.
The UFUQ Human Security Personal Research Directory is being developed and refined throughout this project to assist firefighters in understanding the rapidly changing world of the 21st Century.
Firefighters can simply access a range of web-based information to assist in understanding how the concept of ‘human security’ is connected to the political-economic process of globalisation and Australia’s future as the Australia-China Free Trade Agreement becomes a reality.
Your feedback is sought to assist in deciding what is relevant and interesting to UFUQ members in understanding the range of issues involved and in determining an appropriate definition for the concept of human security in the lives of firefighters.
